Obtaining a Green Card

Green cards are sometimes referred to as permanent alien registration cards and allow immigrants to obtain certain benefits that are providing to lawful United States residents. Individuals who are granted lawful permanent residence with a green card will have a two year probation period. Once the conditional term has been successfully completed, they will be granted legal residence for 10 years. It is important to either adjust your status or renew your green card once the time period is completed to avoid deportation or legal complications in the future.

Obtaining a green card and legal permanent residence status can be family-based, employment-based or through asylum. In a family-based case, you must have an immediate family member within the United States or a family member who currently holds a green card. For employment-based cases, you will need to have your employer present a PERM labor certificate and prove that you are filling a position that cannot be filled by eligible United States citizens. If you were granted asylum through an immigration judge or court proceeding, you may be able to obtain legal residence after one year of being granted asylum. It is important you work with an attorney to help you determine eligibility for any of these cases.
